The Secret Teachings of All Ages

A Breakdown in Esoteric Symbology

Today we are going to dissect a seemingly benign lithograph from one of my all time favorite books and gems of pure if not hidden knowledge, “The Secret Teachings of All Ages” by Manly Palmer Hall. Contained in a dense amount of space, hides many secrets ready to be found by the trained eye. You can obtain you own copy for free from my 4shared page by clicking here. Enjoy!

Hidden in this picture are layers of symbols, stories, and archetypal knowledge concerning cosmology and the cycles of life and consciousness that is influenced by The Great Year, to use Plato’s term,  a natural cycle of approximately 26,000 years of counter clockwise rotation of viewpoint from the Earth (called the Chandler Wobble) which is caused by the physics of the Hollow Earth and the gravitational pull of the Sun(s). As it is true we live in a Binary Galaxy.

In the famous lithograph, we can see the story of our local Universe, the Milky Way Galaxy, and its precessional cosmology (our cosmic origins and in this particular case, it’s cyclical function) displayed through celestial anthropomorphization; which means giving human or animal characteristics to the movement, consciousness, and the behavior of the sun as it travels through each of the 12 constellations.

The truth of the famous da Vinci painting is laid out properly in terms of astrotheology which is displayed in esoteric teachings which at its root is the language and science of symbology.

The ancient Zoroastrians had 12 Heavenly Gods. In Judaism there are the 12 tribes of Israel. The Greeks depicted 12 gods on Mount Olympus. The son of god known before Christ as Mithras also died on the cross and was depicted with 12 disciples (signs of the zodiac), leading to today’s solar messiah Jesus whom was also said to have had 12 disciples. Joseph, the early prototype of Jesus found in the Old Testament, was 1 of 12 brothers. Muslims list 12 ruling Imams following Muhammad. Odin had 12 sons in Norse mythology. There are 12 stations in the Wheel of Life in Tibetan Buddhism. There are 12 houses of the astrology chart, which directly correspond with the 12 constellations. The significance of the number 12 can be seen and felt throughout history.

Mithras, the Bull Slayer (From the Age of Taurus) depicted with his 12 disciples or 12 signs of the zodiac.

This is why the number 12 is rife throughout most theologies, Christianity especially, as the newly anthropomorphized solar deity (the sun or “gods son”) Jesus the Christos (meaning the anointed or ascended one) travels about after the initiated age of 32 (some versions say 30 or even 33 but the meaning remains the same, all adepts go through similar tests at that age throughout time and mystery school successions.

From the 32nd Degree of the Scottish Rites Freemasons to the sacred mushroom taking Jewish priests, the final rites and secrets were typically reserved for those that have both exceeded their ranks and reached this physical age. This is because it is believed that after the age of 32 a purported connection with a galactic consciousness is now possible, which perhaps originates from the Kabbalic teachings of the 32 possible paths of the Tree of Life.

symbology

(noun)
1. the study of symbols.
2. the use of symbols; symbolism.

Now that you have some basic knowledge of the language of symbology, let us return to the lithograph we are going to interpret today. This particular lithograph comes from one of my all time favorite books, “The Secret Teachings of All Ages” by Manly Palmer Hall, an initiated adept of the 33rd degree Scottish Rites Masons.

Back in the early part of the last century M.P Hall imparted an almost incomprehensible amount of beautifully articulated wisdom and knowledge in this monster of a book.

In this picture you can see the procession of the equinox or the Celestial stars and planets that move around us at approximately a 1600 to 2100 year pattern (as not all of the constellations are an even 30 degrees, some fall short and some exceed) leading up to the 26,000 year cycle of the processional equinox, or more approximately around 25,860 years or so (as our movement through the “viscosity” of space differs depending on where our galaxy is in proximity to its own movement through what we call space). For a better detailed explanation of this cycle, check out my all encompassing article here on the Maya 2012 calendar system which in reality, is a way to measure creation and the Procession of the Equinox.

Version 2
At the bottom left of the picture we can see Mohamed holding pages from the Koran with his left foot cast over a broken statue of a different deity, representing iconoclasm by overthrowing the representation of a rival or differing religion; showing the mentality of that particular theology which is that no deity is to be represented or depicted, an ironic bit of symbology considering Mohamed himself is being shown (which is forbidden according in the Koran).

 Version 2
Behind Mohamed is the Celestial Bull, signifying the constellation Taurus and the Galactic Super Wave which appears to come from between his horns; not coincidentally from the exact direction of the supermassive black hole (but more on that later when my book, “The Truth About Everything” releases at the end of the year).

This ancient depiction of the bull breaking open the egg of time also carries with it a much more literal meaning as Taurus begins the cycle of precession as it moves counterclockwise from the perspective of the Earth.

During the time of Taurus we saw a lot of sacrifice and hunter/gatherer mentality of civilization due to the rising and falling cycles of consciousness.

At the end of the Age of Taurus, Moses commanded the people whom still worshipped the “false idol” or golden depiction of the bull (Taurus) to kill themselves. This is because at the end of each 2100-ish year period of the Precession of the Equinox you are supposed to shed the ways and consciousness inherent with the previous Age.

To conclude, each Age is anthropomorphized into animals and human characters (so as to remain within the consciousness of man) the stories will at one point merge together to tell of the natural cycle of progression of mans consciousness throughout the Ages; a physical, demonstrable phenomena.

Version 2

A beautiful bit of esoteric information just in one small inch of the picture alone.

This is further illustrated as the symbols in the picture continues; on the bas relief to the lower right we can see the Pre-Christian solar deity Mithras (all of these esoteric symbols displayed predate Christianity btw) in his sacrificial killing of the Bull (which also has deeper significance of the ending of the Sun’s solar embodiment during mans time in the Age of Taurus.
Mithras slays the celestial bull during the fiducial marker point of the Vernal Equinox – when the North Star points eventually to a new constellation at the end of each Age, just as we saw last December 21, 2012.

The slaying of the celestial bull also is meant to show mankind’s resilience in surviving each of the natural cycles of the super wave as well as the influential cycles of precession.

Mithras also is shown with other members of the zodiac or anthropomorphized constellation figures that are each helping him to kill the sacred bull.

The Divine Serpent of knowledge (often seen as the aurorboros) which also signifies the timeless nature of things is beneath the relief, next to the serpent we can see the two twin dogs or the Dog Star Sirius and its binary twin (which is intentionally also drawn into the partial image of a lion to represent Leo).

Below to the left of Mithras is Cancer the crab, Scorpio, as well as the two Gemini twins to the left of Mithras and the torch of illumination to the right.

Version 2

In the center stands the High Priest of Israel, holding The base of the seven branched candlestick _ the mosaic of symbol of the planetary governors of the world, or the 7 Chaldean planetary bodies that govern the internal and external influences and nature of man.
Version 2

To the left of the high priest is the Golden bull mentioned earlier standing atop of the symbol of our galaxy’s own brown dwarf star hidden partially by the large candle figure in the front for very obscure yet intentionally veiled meanings.

Version 2

Next to the Golden bull sits Jupiter Ammon, often seen as Zeus, holding this flaming lightning bolt with his horns set to represent his solar embodiment’s reign during the Age of Ram or Aires.

Jupiter as Ammon is also represented as Amon or Amman or Ommon ( as the vowels in Hebrew are interchangeable) and is most commonly uttered in praise or prayer still to this day veiled as a utterance of “let it be so” when people of almost all religions and language say this deities name when they say “Amen” at the end of prayer or when they sit to eat. Amen is also the solar deity of Egyptian times known as Ra, or Amen Ra.

Version 2

Above Jupiter/Aires/Ammon we see the four creatures of Ezekiel’s vision of the Apocalypse which surround the altar of the Book of Seven Seals and the sacrificial “lamb of god”.

Version 2

Above this we can see Krishna seated with his foot on the serpent of time, representing his dominion over time and the 7 stars above his head also represent his mastery of the 7 chakras and the Chaldean planetary bodies thought at the time to be the main influences of the inner and external nature of mankind.

Next to this is the most recent anthropomorphized solar deity, Jesus the Christos, whom is pointing past the clouds in the direction of a female version of Gabriel (I’ve heard in some retellings that Gabriel was a woman). Past the Gabriel figure is the pyramids of Egyptian initiation to this sort of information.

Version 2
Finally the picture ends ( there’s more but I covered the best parts) with the bull Apis crowned with a lunar globe and the Father Nile pouring out the source of the rivers (which also doubles as a zodiac reference to Aquarius, the Water Bearer, representing the Age of Enlightenment which comes after the three Ages depicted in this lithograph.

These three Ages of the precession of the Equinox and their influence on consciousness are directly responsible for the religions that were created during each Age in response to the ascending cycle of consciousness. You can see this in the band of the zodiac in the upper left.

The band of the Zodiac, showing three of the previous Ages that are depicted in this lithograph and foreshadowing today's Age of Aquarius.

The band of the Zodiac, showing three of the previous Ages that are depicted in this lithograph and foreshadowing today’s Age of Aquarius.

First is the Taurus the bull when the cult of Mithras was in succession, next is Aires the Ram when the Hebrew faith sprang forth, and finally we have the two fish, the “Jesus fish” of the Age of Pisces which just ended after an almost 2100 year cycle on December 21, 2012. The Maya had their dates on point, their philosophies were just bastardized in recent times by mass media and ignorance.

Hopefully this was enlightening to some as much as it was fun for me to dissect and interpret. Look around you and check out the symbols and signs that surround us, chances are they were created to speak to influential levels of consciousness that you weren’t aware existed. Change your perspective, change your reality; open up your eyes and Life opens up with them.

Much love,

Eric Anthony Crew

“The lips of wisdom are closed, except to the ears of Understanding” — The Kybalion.

As I work to complete my first book, “The Truth About Everything,” I have have begun to read many ancient texts and legends in order to uncover the ontological truths that, due to the obfuscation of the origin of man and our true history, has mainly survived through a type of veiled verbal symbolism, known as esotericism.

The exoteric teachings are better known as the “outermost layer/surface level” that is taught as the verbatim “word of god”, which is the official way of preaching most of the world’s Judeo-Christian influenced theologies and is therefor not allowed to be challenged or questioned in anyway for it is not up to individual interpretation.

This is how most mystery schools of ancient societies ensured only the those steeped in enough esoteric symbology were able to follow their “illuminated” teachings; which contained everything from the philosophic nature and ontological origin of man to the dates of the equinoxes and solstices which in turn assisted in crop production and proliferation of civilizations through elevated communication (or consciousness).

Through the intentional changing of language throughout history, the origin of man has become just as veiled as the esoteric texts that are ascribed to them; take this into consideration while reading an excerpt from Manly P. Hall’s, “The Secret Teachings of All Ages”, (a classic in esoteric hermeticism).

After first introducing a general background for Thoth, in his many characters and representations throughout history, I will conclude this segment with my own esoteric interpretation of these texts.

Dr. Rick Strassman’s epic book brings together science and spirituality into previously uncharted territory. My personal experience with the spirit molecule not only changed my life completely but has helped to confirm my years of research into the “afterlife” and spirituality in general. I plan to one day write about my own journey with DMT and my use of Solfeggio Tunes to further the transcendental journey that N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) has allowed me to experience. DMT should not be taken lightly in concept or in the physical, years of research and personal introspection are necessary to undergo the mystic journey that DMT entails. I read Dr. Rick Strassman’s book nearly overnight and only after a year of research and searching did I undertake the journey myself. To read and download the book, check out my 4shared page HERE. (Aquarian Philosophy in no way owns the rights to DMT: The Spirit Molecule and highly recommend picking up your own copy from www.rickstrassman.com)

The book was popularized into a full length documentary and is also highly recommended.

(UPDATE:) The director of DMT: The Spirit Molecule Mitch Schultz just emailed me to request that I remove the youtube copy of his movie from Aquarian Philosophy‘s webpage.

While wanting to apologize to him for taking away any monetary gains he may have made from those wanting to purchase the film I still want to profess my gratitude for the film and especially for Dr. Rick Strassman’s amazing book that inspired the film. Any available copies found on youtube are likely not posted by those that have spent their hard time, money and research into getting this amazing information out there so please show your support today by watching their film here.

Anyone interested in hearing more about this miracle of nature and mind, please visit their official page today or shoot me an email.

“Rick Strassman MD performed the first new human studies with psychedelic drugs in the US in over 20 years. His research involved the powerful naturally-occurring compound, DMT – N,N-dimethyltryptamine. Led to this substance through his earlier study of the pineal gland as a potential biological locus for spiritual experiences, he administered several hundred doses of DMT to approximately 60 volunteers between 1990 and 1995. He wrote about this research in the popular book, DMT: The Spirit Molecule, which has sold over 100,000 copies, has been translated into 12 languages, and is now available as an audio-book. It also inspired an independent documentary by the same name, picked up by Warner Bros distributing in Fall, 2011. With three distinguished collaborators, he co-authored Inner Paths to Outer Space, which looks more carefully at the common “other worlds” experience that volunteers frequently reported during his research.

Since 1996, Dr. Strassman has been exploring models for the DMT effect focusing primarily on the Old Testament concept of prophecy. Prophecy is a spiritual experience which takes into account the apparently external, free-standing nature of the DMT “worlds,” in which one’s sense of self is highly preserved and interactive. The Old Testament concept of prophecy provides an alternative to other models that borrow more heavily from Eastern religious systems, and those of Latin American shamanism. The notion of prophecy also deals directly with ethical and moral concerns, adding a crucial element to our ability to understand and integrate the content of the psychedelic experience. He is developing these ideas in his next book, The Soul of Prophecy, due to appear in 2013.

Dr. Strassman is currently Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. He is also President and co-founder of the Cottonwood Research Foundation, which is dedicated to consciousness research.”

The Disinformation Interview

“Certitude belongs exclusively to those who only own one encyclopedia.”
Robert Anton Wilson

Robert Anton Wilson is like the grandfather I wish I had growing up, I can imagine hearing his amusing tales of weaving logical ideas of history and then breaking them down to their utter absurdity until you are left questioning even what he said as truth. I highly recommend all of RAW’s books (especially Illuminatus & Schrödinger’s cat Cat) and all of his documentary interviews as well. The first of which I am releasing here at Aquarian Philosophy, as always free to download and digest.

Enjoy.

Understanding the Occult Origins of America with Jordan Maxwell

Jordan Maxwell : Magic of the Matrix

One of the first of the free to download documentary series I will be posting on my 4shared page (once I regain access to said page) comes from none other than the original and true inspiration behind the Matrix series. Take the pill, enter the rabbit hole and see why Jordan Maxwell is still the father of most of the supposedly ‘abstract’ thought you will find within in the “New Age” subculture.

The second of the series of books I shall be uploading for my readers to digest. Here we find one of the most influential esoteric doctrines available, the Doctrine of Transcendental Magic by Eliphas Levi.

Eliphas Levi – Dogma Et Rituel Part I

Part I: The Doctrine of Transcendental Magic

INTRODUCTION

BEHIND the veil of all the hieratic and mystical allegories of ancient doctrines, behind the darkness and strange ordeals of all initiations, under the seal of all sacred writings, in the ruins of Nineveh or Thebes, on the crumbling stones of old temples and on the blackened visage of the Assyrian or Egyptian sphinx, in the monstrous or marvellous paintings which interpret to the faithful of India the inspired pages of the Vedas, in the cryptic emblems of our old books on alchemy, in the ceremonies practised at reception by all secret societies, there are found indications of a doctrine which is everywhere the same and everywhere carefully concealed. Occult philosophy seems to have been the nurse or god-mother of all intellectual forces, the key of all divine obscurities and the absolute queen of society in those ages – when it was reserved exclusively for the education of priests and of kings. It reigned in Persia with the Magi, who perished in the end, as perish all masters of the world, because they abused their power; it endowed India with the most wonderful traditions and with an incredible wealth of poesy, grace and terror in its emblems; it civilized Greece to the music of the lyre of Orpheus; it concealed the principles of all sciences, all progress of the human mind, in the daring calculations of Pythagoras; fable abounded in its miracles, and history, attempting to estimate this unknown power, became confused with fable; it undermined or consolidated empires by its oracles, caused tyrants to tremble on their thrones and governed all minds, either by curiosity or by fear. For this sci- ence, said the crowd, there is nothing impossible, it commands the elements, knows the language of the stars and directs the planetary courses; when it speaks, the moon falls blood-red from heaven; the dead rise in their graves and mutter ominous words, as the night wind blows through their skulls. Mistress of love or of hate, occult science can dispense paradise or hell at its pleasure to human hearts; it disposes of all forms and confers beauty or ugliness; with the wand of Circe it changes men into brutes and animals alternately into men; it disposes even of life and death, can confer wealth on its adepts by the transmutation of metals and immortality by its quintessence or elixir, compounded of gold and light.

Such was Magic from Zoroaster to Manes, from Orpheus to Apollonius of Tyana, when positive Christianity, victorious at length over the brilliant dreams and titanic aspirations of the Alexandrian school, dared to launch its anathemas publicly against this philosophy, and thus forced it to become more occult and mysterious than ever. Moreover, strange and alarming rumours began to circulate concerning initiates or adepts; they were surrounded every where by an ominous influence, and they destroyed or distracted those who allowed themselves to be beguiled by their honeyed eloquence or by the sorcery of their learning. The women whom they loved became Stryges and their children vanished at nocturnal meetings, while men whispered shudderingly and in secret of bloodstained orgies and abominable banquets. Bones had been found in the crypts of ancient temples, shrieks had been heard in the night, harvests withered and herds sickened when the magician passed by. Diseases which defied medical skill appeared at times in the world, and always, it was said, beneath the envenomed glance of the adepts. At length a universal cry of execration went up against Magic, the mere name became a crime and the common hatred was formulated in this sentence: “Magicians to the flames!” – as it was shouted some centuries earlier: “To the lions with the Christians!” Now the multitude never conspires except against real powers; it does not know what is true, but it has the instinct of what is strong. It remained for the eighteenth century to deride both Christians and Magic, while infatuated with the disquisitions of Rousseau and the illusions of Cagliostro.

Science, notwithstanding, is at the basis of Magic, as at the root of Christianity there is love, and in the Gospel symbols we find the Word Incarnate adored in His cradle by Three Magi, led thither by a star – the triad and the sign of the microcosm – and receiving their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, a second myste- rious triplicity, under which emblem the highest secrets of the Kabalah are allegorically contained. Christianity owes therefore no hatred to Magic, but human ignorance has ever stood in fear of the unknown. The science was driven into hiding to escape the impassioned assaults of blind desire: it clothed itself with new hieroglyphics, falsified its intentions, denied its hopes. Then it was that the jargon of alchemy was created, an impenetrable illusion for the vulgar in their greed of gold, a living language only for the true disciple of Hermes.

Extraordinary fact! Among the sacred records of the Christians there are two texts which the infallible Church makes no claim to understand and has never attempted to expound: these are the Prophecy of Ezekiel and the Apocalypse, two Kabalistic Keys reserved assuredly in heaven for the commentaries of Magian Kings, books sealed as with seven seals for faithful believers, yet perfectly plain to an initiated infidel of the occult sciences. There is also another work, but, although it is popular in a sense and may be found everywhere, this is of all most occult and unknown, because it is the key of the rest. It is in public evidence with- out being known to the public; no one suspects its existence and no one dreams of seeking it where it actually is. This book, which may be older than that of Enoch, actually has never been translated, but is still preserved unmutilated in primeval characters, on detached leaves, like the tablets of the ancients. The fact has eluded notice, though a distinguished scholar has revealed, not indeed its secret, but its antiquity and singular preservation. Another scholar, but of a mind more fantastic than judicious, passed years in the study of this masterpiece, and has merely suspected its plenary importance. It is, in truth, a monumental and extraordinary work, strong and simple as the architecture of the pyramids, and consequently enduring like those – a book which is the summary of all sciences, which can resolve all problems by its infinite combinations, which speaks by evoking thought, is the inspirer and moderator of all possible conceptions, and the masterpiece perhaps of the human mind. It is to be counted unquestionably among the very great gifts bequeathed to us by antiquity; it is a universal key, the name of which has been explained and comprehended only by the learned William Postel; it is a unique test, whereof the initial characters alone plunged into ecstasy the devout spirit of Saint-Martin, and might have restored reason to the sublime and unfortunate Swedenborg. We shall recur to this book later on, for its mathematical and precise explanation will be the complement and crown of our conscientious undertaking.

The original alliance between Christianity and the Science of the Magi, once demonstrated fully, will be a discovery of no second-rate importance, and we do not doubt that the serious study of Magic and the Kabalah will lead earnest minds to a reconciliation of science and dogma, of reason and faith, heretofore regarded as impossible.

We have said that the Church, whose special office is the custody of the Keys, does not pretend to possess those of the Apocalypse or of Ezekiel. In the opinion of Christians the scientific and magical Clavicles of Solomon are lost, which notwith- standing, it is certain that, in the domain of intelligence, ruled by the Word noth- ing that has been written can perish. Whatsoever men cease to understand exists for them no longer, at least in the order of the Word, and it passes then into the domain of enigma and mystery. Furthermore, the antipathy and even open war of the Official Church against all that belongs to the realm of Magic, which is a kind of personal and emancipated priesthood, is allied with necessary and even with inherent causes in the social and hierarchic constitution of Christian sacerdotalism. The Church ignores Magic – for she must either ignore it or perish, as we shall prove later on; yet she does not recognize the less that her mysterious Founder was saluted in His cradle by Three Magi – that is to say, by the hieratic ambassadors of the three parts of the known world and the three analogical worlds of occult philosophy. In the School of Alexandria, Magic and Christianity almost joined hands under the auspices of Ammonius Saccas and of Plato; the doctrine of Hermes is found almost in its entirety in the writings attributed to Dionysius the Areopagite; Synesius outlined the plan of a treatise on dreams, which was annotated subsequently by Cardan, and composed hymns that might have served for the liturgy of the Church of Swedenborg, could a church of the illuminated possess a liturgy. With this period of fiery abstractions and impas- sioned warfare of words there must be connected also the philosophic reign of Julian, called the Apostate because in his youth he made unwilling profession of Christianity. Everyone is aware that Julian had the misfortune to be a hero out of season of Plutarch, and that he was, if one may say so, the Don Quixote of roman Chivalry; but what most people do not know is that he was one of the illuminated and an initiate of the first order: that he believed in the unity of God and in the

universal doctrine of the Trinity; that, in a word, he regretted nothing of the old world but its magnificent symbols and its too gracious images. Julian was not a pagan; he was a Gnostic allured by the allegories of Greek polytheism, who had the misfortune to find the name of Jesus Christ less sonorous than that of Orpheus. The Emperor paid in his person for the academical tastes of the philoso- pher and rhetorician, and after affording himself the spectacle and satisfaction of expiring like Epaminondas with the periods of Cato, he had in public opinion, by this time fully Christianized, but anathemas for his funeral oration and a scornful epithet for his ultimate memorial.

Let us pass over the petty minds and small matters of the Bas-Empire, and proceed to the Middle Ages . . . . Stay, take this book! Glance at the seventh page, then seat yourself on the mantle which I am spreading, and let each of us cover our eyes with one of its corners . . . . Your head swims, does it not, and the earth seems to fly beneath your feet? Hold tightly, and do not look right or left . . . . The vertigo ceases: we are here. Stand up and open your eyes, but take care before all things to make no Christian sign and to pronounce no Christian words. We are in a landscape of Salvator Rosa, a troubled wilderness which seems resting after a storm. There is no moon in the sky, but you can distinguish little stars gleaming in the brushwood, and may hear about you the slow flight of great birds, which seem to whisper strange oracles as they pass. Let us approach silently that crossroad among the rocks. A harsh, funereal trumpet winds sud- denly, and black torches flare up on every side. A tumultuous throng is surging round a vacant throne: all watch and wait. Suddenly they cast themselves on the ground. A goat-headed prince bounds forward among them; he ascends the throne, turns, and assuming a stooping posture, presents to the assembly a human face, which everyone comes forward to salute and to kiss, their black taper in their hands. With a hoarse laugh he recovers an upright position, and then dis- tributes gold, secret instructions, occult medicines and poisons to his faithful bondsmen. Meanwhile, fires are lighted of fern and alder, piled up with human bones and the fat of executed criminals. Druidesses, crowned with wild parsley and vervain, immolate unbaptized children with golden knives and prepare horri- ble love-feasts. Tables are spread, masked men seat themselves by half-nude females, and a Bacchanalian orgy begins; there is nothing wanting but salt, the symbol of wisdom and immortality. Wine flows in streams, leaving stains like blood; obscene advances and abandoned caresses begin. A little while, and the whole assembly is beside itself with drink and wantonness, with crimes and sing- ing. They rise, a disordered throng, and form infernal dances . . . . Then come all legendary monsters, all phantoms of nightmare; enormous toads play inverted flutes and thump with paws on flanks; limping scarabaei mingle in the dance; crabs play the castanets; crocodiles beat time on their scales; elephants and mam- moths appear habited like Cupids and foot it in the ring: finally, the giddy circles break up and scatter on all sides . . . . Every yelling dancer drags away a dishev- elled female . . . . Lamps and candles formed of human fat go out smoking in the darkness . . . . Cries are heard here and there, mingled with peals of laughter, blasphemies and rattlings in the throat. Come, rouse yourself: do not make the sign of the cross! See, I have brought you home. You are in your bed, not a little worn out, possibly a trifle shattered, by your night’s journey and its orgy; but you have beheld that of which everyone talks without knowledge; you have been initi- ated into secrets no less terrible than the grotto of Triphonius; you have been present at the Sabbath. It remains for you now to preserve your wits, to have a wholesome dread of the law, and to keep at a respectful distance from the Church and her faggots.

Would you care, as a change, to behold something less fantastic, more real and also more truly terrible? You shall assist at the execution of Jacques de Molay and his accomplices or his brethren in martyrdom . . . . Be not misled, however; con- fuse not the guilty and the innocent! Did the Templars really adore Baphomet? Did they offer a shameful salutation to the buttocks of the goat of Mendes? What was actually this secret and potent association which imperilled Church and State, and was thus destroyed unheard? Judge nothing lightly; they are guilty of a great crime; they have exposed to profane eyes the sanctuary of antique initiation. They have gathered again and have shared the fruits of the tree of knowledge, so that they might become masters of the world. The judgement pronounced against them is higher and far older than the tribunal of pope or king: “On the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die,” said God Himself, as we read in the Book of Genesis.

What then is taking place in the world, and why do priests and potentates tremble? What secret power threatens tiaras and crowns? A few bedlamites are roaming from land to land, concealing, as they say, the Philosophical Stone under their ragged vesture. They can change earth into gold, and they are without food or lodging! Their brows are encircled by an aureole of glory and by a shadow of ignominy! One has discovered the universal science and goes vainly seeking death to escape the agonies of his triumph: he is the Majorcan Raymond Lully. Another heals imaginary diseases by fantastic remedies, belying beforehand that proverb which enforces the futility of a cautery on a wooden leg: he is the marvellous Paracelsus, always drunk and always lucid, like the heroes of Rabelais. Here is William Postel writing naively to the fathers of the Council of Trent, proclaiming that he has discovered the absolute doctrine, hidden from the foundation of the world, and is longing to share it with them. The Council heeds not the maniac, does not vouchsafe to condemn him, but proceeds to examine the grave questions of efficacious grace and sufficing grace. He whom we behold perishing poor and abandoned is Cornelius Agrippa, less of a magician than any, though the vulgar persist in regarding him as a more potent sorcerer than all because he was sometimes a cynic and mystifier. What secret do these men bear with them to their tomb? Why are they wondered at without being understood? Why are they con- demned unheard? Why are they initiates of those terrific secret sciences of which the Church and society are afraid? Why are they acquainted with things of which others know nothing? Why do they conceal what all men burn to know? Why are they invested with a dread and unknown power? The occult sciences! Magic! These words will reveal all and give food for further thought! De omni re scribili et quibusdum aliis.

THE MYSTERIES OF FREEMASONRY

CHAPTER I

THE RELIGION OF THE SECRET

Man is a creature of mind and matter. To the realm of mind belongs metaphysical thought which, whether trained or untrained, is peculiar to each individual and is subject for its development or restraint to his will. It is the basis of religion in the generally accepted sense of this word ; it is purely spiritual and can reach the height of mysticism. From it issue creeds or doc- trines and the erection of a theological system of beliefs. Imparted to other individuals and accepted by them, the metaphysical thought of a few great minds has become the basis of religious systems. Upon its teaching was grafted a Ritual or Law, disciplining the life, mystic, moral, social and even physical, of its adherents or believers. From the exercise of such laws, theocracy or the rule of priesthood was evolved. It is to be found in every religion regardless of the fact that in some instances like in the Buddhist doctrine of Gautama and in the teaching of Jesus Christ, nothing is further removed than ritualism from the metaphysical thought or religious conception of the founders.

The power of theocrasy or exercise of government rule over the masses by a hierarchy of priests or adepts rested on its dual system of teaching, namely : Exote- rism and Esoterism, the former a code of discipline of the thought and mode of life of the masses, the latter the hierarchic school wherein were trained the chosen adepts destined to safeguard the rules imposed upon the people by the high priests.

Upon a close study of the manifold religious systems, the corruption of which led to theocratic rule, namely, Brahminism, the Ancient Egyptian Cult, Mosaism or Judaism, Christianism and Mahometanism, one finds the accepted belief of Monotheism as the basis of esoteric or secret belief or doctrine. Monotheism is here taken in the sense of First Principle.

Whereas the Egyptian high priesthood of Memphis kept this theory as the esoteric teaching of the high adepts, Moses, brought up as one of them, gave it as exoteric or popular belief to the Israelitic sect to which he belonged, embodying it in a deity, the terrible Jehovah of the Jews.

Another side of the esoteric teaching was that of occultism, the development of all human psychic forces which, when misused, lead to the practice of magic. The esoteric part of all religions or hermeticism, the teaching and practice of occultism, led to the development of what might be termed the religion of the secret, which eventually overshadowed and helped to dissimulate subversive activities.

It is with this that we are chiefly concerned and will endeavour, to some degree, to show its baneful influence on society of all creeds and nations. Let the reader bear in mind that it is not the object of this work to discuss the place occupied and the part played by either Metaphysics and Philosophy on the one hand, and Science and Ritualism on the other. The limitations of each and its encroachment upon the territory of the others, the ensuing conflicts, are matter for the history of fanaticism throughout the ages. Our aim is to follow the outgrowth of Esoterism and a few of its multiple ramifications in the realm of perversion and subversion.
